The origin

For a year, Silicon Interfaces developed sites for internet and e-commerce in the United States in Companies, like Microsoft Corporation, using tools and technologies which were ground breaking and participated in developing robust sites with huge hits. Hence, the core expertise existed in the Company to technologically deliver a B2C e-commerce site. Further, the management team partly interacted with program management from companies in the Seattle area – where the germ idea for companies, like Amazon.com, Infospace, Network Commerce (formerly ShopNow), Ubarter.com (now a division of Network Commerce), Drugstore.com, Expedia.com and a host of startup companies operating in the areas of auctioning, reverse-auctioning and other areas, were seeded and grown during the year. It is also relevant to add that Silicon Interfaces also has a VLSI Design team active in the Networking and Internet hardware domain designing and developing infrastructure hardware in the Silicon Valley. This knowledge has been extremely useful in anticipating bandwidth and infrastructure requirements for this site.

Though a blue print of esiliconworld.com was drawn up in October 1999, more as a catalog shopping site or a single store, it was only in mid-November 1999 that the design team met (with pots of tea to fight jet lag) in mid-town Mumbai and evolved the strategy for developing India’s first Cybermall. Esiliconworld.com design team were determined to deliver something which the world had yet to witness, something of Amazon, a bit of Ebay, Ubarter, Priceline and other e-commerce sites, so that an internet shopper may have the maximum command of choice and the maximum power to get value. Thus, beyond Amazon was born …

The beginning

A partial Esiliconworld.com went live and kicking on December 24th 1999. And as Silicon Interfaces offices worked around the clock and around the world, a fully functional shopping kernel for esiliconworld.com was born along with the birth of the new millennium.

Across the years, esiliconworld.com had undergone changes and upgrades at breath-taking speed. NRI (Non-Resident Internet) User Payment Gateway went live in March, more and more eMerchants joined the program right through the year and now eClassified, Auctioning and Bartering are available as choice to an eShopper.

In September 2002, the site had a complete overhaul in terms of fresh user interfaces and graphics alongwith a new shopping kernel making cyber-shopping even more convenient and interesting!

For NRI s

The NRI or Non Resident Internet (our target audience is broader than the generic connotation taken for a NRI and includes amongst others colleagues of multi-nationals based in India, etc.) user is segment to residents of North America, United Kingdom and the Gulf. There are of course, other NRI markets but esiliconworld.com is first focusing on these major segments. In North America and the United Kingdom, the Cybermall is already opened up a campaign to drive traffic, registered Users and transaction to the site. The campaign is being coordinated by our North American offices, in the Silicon Valley and Seattle. Similarly, in UK – the Cybermall is being opened for NRI’s shortly and shall be supported through our office in London.

The response has been extremely encouraging.
