For a year, Silicon Interfaces developed sites for
internet and e-commerce in the United States in Companies, like Microsoft
Corporation, using tools and technologies which were ground breaking and
participated in developing robust sites with huge hits. Hence, the core
expertise existed in the Company to technologically deliver a B2C e-commerce
site. Further, the management team partly interacted with program management
from companies in the Seattle area – where the germ idea for companies, like
Amazon.com, Infospace, Network Commerce (formerly ShopNow), Ubarter.com (now a
division of Network Commerce), Drugstore.com, Expedia.com and a host of startup
companies operating in the areas of auctioning, reverse-auctioning and other
areas, were seeded and grown during the year. It is also relevant to add that
Silicon Interfaces also has a VLSI Design team active in the Networking
and Internet hardware domain designing and developing infrastructure hardware in
the Silicon Valley. This knowledge has been extremely useful in anticipating
bandwidth and infrastructure requirements for this site.
Though a blue print of esiliconworld.com was drawn up in
October 1999, more as a catalog shopping site or a single store, it was only in
mid-November 1999 that the design team met (with pots of tea to fight jet lag)
in mid-town Mumbai and evolved the strategy for developing India’s first
Cybermall. Esiliconworld.com design team were determined to deliver something
which the world had yet to witness, something of Amazon, a bit of Ebay, Ubarter,
Priceline and other e-commerce sites, so that an internet shopper may have the
maximum command of choice and the maximum power to get value. Thus, beyond
